The Skoda Car Museum was opened in 1995 in the town Mlada Boleslav on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of Laurin & Klement Car factory - one of the oldest European car factories.
In 1895 - The mechanic Vaclav Laurin and the book-seller Vaclav Klement - both bicycle enthusiasts, started manufacturing of bicycles of their own design. Few years later The Laurin & Klement began producing motorcycles. After initial experiments at the turn of the century production of motorcycles was gradually replaced by automobiles. Skoda has been producing automobiles since 1905.
The first Laurin & Klement automobile - Voiturette A - the grandfather of automobiles - was a full success, later it became the archetype of Czech automobile classics. The volume of production increased and soon exceeded the potential of a private enterprise. In 1907 the founders of Company initiated conversion to a joint-stock company.
In 1925 fusion with the Pilsen Skoda Co. was accomplished and marked the end of the Laurin & Klement trade-mark.
After the political changes in 1989, under the new market economy conditions, Czech Government decided to cooperate with the German Volkswagen Group. The Skoda-Volkswagen joint venture began to operate in 1991 under the name Skoda, automobilova a.s..
Mlada Boleslav is situated 1 hour drive from Prague, to the North East.
